Our Facebook group moderator, and MtM Diamond spending podcast legend, Ryan shared the details of his American Express Surpass retention offer with me. The offer is an absolute juggernaut. You could say that I am mighty jealous of him right now. I already added it to our retention offer database (with hundreds of data points) but this one was worth a post on its own.
The annual fee just posted on Ryan’s Amex Surpass card so he decided to reach out to American Express via chat to see if there was a retention offer on the account. Even though he had no intention of closing the card he figured it was worth a shot. Heck, Amex is giving away free money right now essentially, so why not give it a go?
The 60,000 points are worth between $250-$300 depending on how you value Hilton Honors points. That is a massive haul for a card with only a $95 annual fee.
What makes this offer even better is that Ryan hasn’t completed his $15,000 spend for the free night yet this year. That means he gets to double dip these two bonuses at the same time. The card already has a very rewarding earning structure:
The 6X earning categories, plus the $15K free night, are a big reason why I still spend on my Surpass every year.
If Ryan completes the entire required spend in the 6X earning categories, and maximizes the free night he’ll earn down the road, he would essentially earn a staggering 32 points per dollar on that spend. He would get 6X for the normal spend, 6X more for the free night cert if redeemed on a 90K+ a night room and 20X on the retention offer. I know this is only for $3,000 worth of spend but it is still fun to break out. The offer is large enough that it is pretty much like getting a new welcome offer on the card.
Hopefully some others out there are able to get a similar offer on their Surpass card. This is the largest offer I have seen yet on the card. The $1,000 Business Platinum card retention offer is still the king of kings for retention offers though.
Remember to check our massive retention offer database before reaching out for your offer. And, share your recent results in the comments!
