In a move to compete with the likes of Spotify, Tidal now offers a free listening tier that's supported by ads. Here's the lowdown.

If you've ever wanted to try Tidal, but weren't willing to pay for it, now's your chance.

Tidal has launched a free subscription tier, joining the likes of Spotify and Amazon Music. Tidal was once owned by Jay-Z and has since been acquired by Jack Dorsey’s payment company, Square.

Keep reading to find out all you need to know about Tidal's new free tier.

Tidal Launches a Free Music Tier

In a first for the music streaming service, Tidal has launched a free music subscription option, Tidal Free, to give more music lovers access to its service.

Tidal Free is one of three of Tidal's new subscription options, alongside Tidal HiFi, which costs $10, and Tidal HiFi Plus, which costs $20.

Tidal Free gives you access to Tidal's entire music catalog of more than 80 million songs, videos, and curated playlists, with "limited interruptions."

Tidal didn't specify whether those interruptions would be from its own promotions of other subscription tiers, or if they'd be ads from third parties.

To start your free trial, simply go to Tidal's free tier page and then follow the prompts on the screen. At the time of writing, Tidal Free is only available to users in the US, with plans to expand to other markets in the future.

Tidal's Free Tier Means More Competition for Other Music Streaming Services

Tidal's launch of a free subscription tier brings it in line with Spotify and Amazon Music, which also offer free tiers. This could mean that Spotify and Amazon Music could have a strong contender in Tidal.

Until now, some of Tidal's subscription tiers have been on the pricier side, compared to Spotify and Amazon Music, which could explain why it's typically been less popular among music lovers.

With the new free tier, people now have a reason to choose Tidal over the more popular streaming services, and those who've been curious about it will give it a shot.
